Literature Review to National Foot and Ankle Review

We have finished writing an literature review in which we will submit to National Foot and Ankle Review, a student-run journal at the California School of Podiatric Medicine. We will post actual article once we finalize editing. Here is the abstract:

Background: There are limited studies done thus far on foot conditions and podiatric medical care for the homeless populations. A literature review was undertaken to evaluate any studies done on lower extremity health needs among homeless populations.
Methods: We did a literature search through PubMed, the US National Library of Medicine’s database of biomedical citations and abstracts for relevant publications from 1988 – 2008. We also searched the references cited in the articles found for any relevance on podiatric needs for the homeless populations.
Results: We found three relevant articles that addressed the needs of podiatric care for the homeless. The articles highlighted the importance of foot care among homeless populations, including potentially limb-threatening pathologies that homeless populations are at higher risk of obtaining.
Conclusions: The limited studies done so far on homeless populations addresses the major public health need of podiatric care among homeless populations. More studies are needed for extensive analysis of the podiatric needs of the homeless populations. To address this, we plan to do a survey research study in San Francisco, CA.
